Without Composing_n°1[ver.2]

The installation Without Composing_n°1[ver.2] brings together dozens of Geiger-Müller counters, instruments for measuring radioactivity. CHANG Yung-Ta began using them in 2011, following the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan. During a residency in Tokyo at that time, he was deeply impacted by the idea of the invisible presence of radioactive particles. The radiation measured on Earth comes from several natural sources: some are emitted by materials, particularly rocks, while others reach us from space via cosmic radiation. Here, the counters capture the spontaneous circulation of radiation by emitting sounds that allow them to be located.

This normally elusive phenomenon becomes omnipresent: like the hum of insects hidden in vegetation, it serves as a clue to what cannot be seen. The installation immerses us in cosmic radiation whose sources are infinitely distant and out of reach, leaving us to imagine the vastness of the physical phenomena that, without our awareness, continuously pass through us.

裝置作品《Without Composing_n°1[ver.2]》匯集了數十支蓋格-穆勒管——測量輻射的儀器。張永達自 2011 年日本福島核災後開始使用它們；當時他正於東京駐村，輻射粒子那不可見的在場，深深撼動了他。

地球上所測得的輻射來自若干自然來源：一部分由物質所釋放，尤以岩石為著；另一部分則以宇宙射線之姿，自太空抵達我們。在此，計數管以聲音捕捉輻射自發的流動——那些聲響，讓它們得以被指認位置。

這原本難以捉摸的現象於是無所不在：一如藏身草木間的蟲鳴，成為不可見之物的線索。裝置將我們浸沒於宇宙射線之中——它們的源頭無限遙遠、遙不可及——留予我們去想像那些物理現象的浩瀚：它們始終穿過我們，而我們渾然不覺。
