Text論述

relativity +/-[n°1] rests on a minimal black metal frame: two black iron plates, 25 × 25 × 1 cm, with an electric heating plate pressed between them — the heat source withdrawn into the thickness of iron, unseen, only heard. The plates were cut in the studio; as the work was welded together, spatters of slag fused onto their surfaces. These residues of making were never cleaned away; instead, they became the work's true sounding body.

Through repeated cycles of heating and cooling, slag and iron expand and contract at different rates. One heat, two materials, two responses — and it is within this differential that sound is born: crisp, rhythmic, like a pulse driven by heat. If what the body perceives is only ever difference, then here difference no longer waits to be perceived — it makes itself heard. What we hear is neither the iron nor the slag, but the interval between them.

These minute sounds are gathered and amplified by a highly directional microphone suspended above, and reach the listener through headphones. The microphone is an ear extended beyond the body, pushing hearing into scales the skin cannot reach; the headphones fold listening into a one-to-one intimacy — alone with a plate of iron, you hear it recount the history of its own making. With every passage of heat, the scars of its welding sound again.
