matrix.24 N°1[hyper.data ver.]
This installation extends matrix.24 N°1, a work from the first part of the Seen/Unseen series, and forms a pair with Seen/Unseen N°0[hyper.data ver.]: here too, the vast unseen body of data and seismic waveforms behind the original work is turned inside out to become the material itself. The two share a single mechanism, and differ only in the body that receives the vibration — water exchanged for metal.
Here again, the images involve no pre-recorded footage: software reads the seismic data at random and in real time, generating images in the present moment. The intensity of the data being read is converted, simultaneously, into the intensity of sound — signals of extreme low frequency drive a bass shaker beneath a large metal plate, setting the entire sheet of metal into low-frequency resonance.
Metal answers nothing like water. Water receives upon its surface, rendering the slightest disturbance as visible ripples; metal resounds with its whole body — rigid, dense matter becomes, in the low frequencies, a resonating body, and its sound does not stay at the surface of the thing but fills the entire space. When an earthquake strikes, it is precisely what is rigid — steel, structure — that groans in the shaking; this metal plate stands like a fragment of the built world, sounding the earth anew through its own material. Sharing a single source, visualized data structure and extreme low-frequency resonance coexist, each inflecting the other — and here, at last, data is no longer merely image and code held before the eyes: it fills the air, envelops the body. We no longer stand before the data — we stand within it.
