Text論述

"AP" stands for Akiyoshi Plateau. AP[N°-0] is a prototype work created in 2013, during my residency at the Akiyoshidai International Art Village (AIAV) in Yamaguchi, Japan. Akiyoshidai is known for its karst landscape and limestone caves. The first time I walked across the plateau, I was struck by the wind arriving from every direction, moving through my body and brushing past my ears — like countless whispers around me, minute and distinct.

I collected electric fans from local residents and families. Each fan differs in type, function, and wind speed; each carries a character of its own, almost like a person. In the installation, the fans form a circle, oscillating and blowing, while an omnidirectional microphone at the center gathers the sound between them.

The work is not merely a representation of the wind on the Akiyoshi Plateau. The fans stand for the people and families of Akiyoshidai, talking and exchanging with one another without boundary or reservation. Free, simple, and open — this was what I felt when visiting and speaking with the local people, just like the wind that moves across the plateau.
