Aftershocks give no warning. In the twenty-four hours after 3.11, the eyes stayed fixed on ceaselessly updating seismic reports while the ears strained toward every faint sound nearby; the body became a hypersensitive receiver, and time no longer flowed — it congealed, together with the taut nerves.
More than a year later, the work returns to those twenty-four hours at an almost clinical remove: three black cubic volumes, each built from twenty-four layered sheets of black acrylic, laser-engraved with every seismic waveform recorded across those hours. Light rises from below through the stacked sheets, escaping only along the engraved lines — invisible seismic waves develop, between black and black, into three-dimensional strata of waveforms.
Tremors once endured passively by the body are compressed and congealed here into an object that can be circled and observed. Looking becomes a belated act of sorting: in the order of data, facing once more the waves that could neither be seen nor foreseen.
